ISSUES AND PROGRAMMING 03/31/2018
The following is a summary of some of the program broadcast by Station WRIV (AM), Riverhead to address issues of concern in our service area. This list is by no means an exhaustive study but rather, a brief synopsis of our efforts.

Eastern Suffolk is New York State’s most productive farm region. Farmers are under tremendous pressure to sell their property for development. WRIV presents The Ag Radio Network Farm News to report on agricultural trends to preserve this way of life.

ACCESS TO ELECTED OFFICIALS
There is no daily newspaper on the East End, and even with the internet, frequently it is hard for the public to hear from their local elected officials. WRIV presents the elected officials listed below to give the public their view on the issues that face the towns and county.

While the area does not have a daily newspaper, Gianna Volpe is a long time freelance journalist who is published in several weekly newspapers. The Freelance Report is an in depth look at local news that affects listeners.

The WRIV Community Bulletin Board provides non-profit groups free access to publicize their events so they can devote more of their resources to relieving suffering in the WRIV area.

WRIV broadcasts The Dawn Patrol, a local news/talk morning show that enables listeners to speak on the air about local issues and concerns in the WRIV service area.

Health care remains an important issue nationally and locally. Peconic Bay Medcial Center is the area’s leading health care facility, as well as being the single largest enterprise in Riverhead Town. PBMC produces commercials and Public Service Announcements that deal with important issues in health care and their programs to address them. WRIV provides free publicity for the medical center in addition to its commercial schedule.

END OF LIFE ISSUES
24% of Riverhead Town’s population are those over 65. Given this fact, and given the fact that there are very few facilities on Long Island that deal effectively with end of life issues and palliative care, East End Hospice in Westhampton Beach is the leading facility out here. WRIV provides publicity to them so they can reach the public to help address those end of life issues.

Suffolk County has the highest number of Opiod deaths in New York State. It starts with teenagers taking their parents’ pain medication and eventually ends up in heroin addiction and a lot of times, death. WRIV presents Bobby Hartmann, a recovering addict and owner of Main Stream House Recovery Homes to discuss treatment and more importantly, prevention.
