Eastern Long Island’s first radio station, WRIV Radio 1390AM, Your Home Town Station, began broadcasting on June 20, 1955 as the sister station of WALK AM-FM, Patchogue. Six months after we signed on, what has been called the second worst fire in Riverhead history completely destroyed our original studios at 29 East Main Street.
In 1963, the station was sold to a group led by CBS Executive Edward W. Wood Jr., and NBC News anchorman Chet Huntley. Under their leadership, WRIV Radio built on its reputation for outstanding programming on local news coverage. The station would be sold again in 1981 and finally came under its current ownership in 1987.
Over the years, some of the most talented names in radio have been heard on this station including Bob Klein, who was the legendary man on the sister station WALK did middays here. Ted Brown came to WRIV after WNEW, New York went off-the-air in 1992. CBS staffer Ted Marvel came to the station in 1963 and ABC News commentator Paul Hervey continues to be heard on WRIV Radio 1390AM, Your Hometown Station.
